AUSTIN—The Ted Cruz for U.S. Senate campaign launched its second television ad of the race today, highlighting Cruz’s fight for over three million veterans, successfully defending the constitutionality of a cross erected to honor fallen World War I heroes.
The new ad, “Mojave,” airing in markets across Texas, features Cruz’s pro bono work defending the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial, erected in 1934, which atheists sued to have removed.
Along with co-counsel Kelly Shackelford of the Liberty Institute, Cruz represented as amici The American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. In April 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision in favor of the veterans.
“Ted Cruz has a proven record of standing up for religious liberty and for veterans’ rights,” said Cruz spokesman James Bernsen. “Across America, religious freedom is under assault. Radical, anti-religious zealots are pushing an agenda of state suppression of religious expression in order to scour the public square of any acknowledgment of the Almighty. And the litigants are deliberately targeting memorials erected to honor our military men and women.”
“Anyone who has ever served will tell you there are no atheists in foxholes,” Bernsen said. “Faith has inspired, comforted and consoled men and women in our armed forces since George Washington first prayed on bended knee in the snows of Valley Forge. Ted Cruz fought to defend that tradition, he fought to defend liberty, and he fought to defend our veterans.”
Cruz has earned endorsements from many of the top conservative leaders in Texas andnationally, including: Senators Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, Tom Coburn, Mike Lee and Pat Toomey, as well as Tea Party Express, Mark Levin, Dr. James Dobson, Gun Owners of America, Family Research Council Action PAC, Concerned Women PAC, Cathie Adams, Texas Home School Coalition PAC, Kelly Shackelford, David Barton, Peggy Venable, Young Conservatives of Texas, over 200 Texas Republican women leaders, and more.
