President Obama Disregards Congress and the Constitution

This week, in making several bogus “recess” appointments, President Obama once again demonstrated his autocratic arrogance, disregarding Congress and the constraints of the Constitution. His disdain for Congress – and the American people who elected them – is manifest.

This President – who has more Czars than Czarist Russia – is bound and determined to force his agenda down the throat of the American people, no matter what we think.  He did it with ObamaCare, he did it with the offshore drilling moratorium, he did it by attacking right-to-work states and the Boeing plant in SC, he did it with the EPA’s out-of control rulemaking, he did it with Fast and Furious’s criminal disregard of our rights, and he did again through these illegal recess appointments.

Only by defeating Obama in 2012 – and electing strong constitutional conservatives to lead the fight in the Senate – can we stop this abusive agenda.

But  his latest action is not only abusive, it’s also unconstitutional.  Because the Senate is not in recess, the Constitution does not allow him to make a “recess” appointment.  Indeed, his very own Solicitor General explained (inadvertently) why these appointments were unconstitutional.

Even the liberal New Republic thinks this appointment is probably unconstitutional.

President Obama’s determination to ignore Congress is explicit:  “But when Congress refuses to act, and as a result, hurts our economy and puts our people at risk, then I have an obligation as President to do what I can without them.”

It seems his approach is that, when the 2010 election didn’t go his way, he’ll just ignore our wishes and keep doing what he was doing – for “our own good.”  This has been the argument put forth by dictators since time immemorial, and it’s why the Founders established checks and balances to prevent this kind of overreach.  President Obama isn’t actually a dictator – just a frustrated president whose own arrogance blinds him to dissent.  His frustration, and his willingness disregard the law, is dangerous.

This new agency is certain to destroy jobs in the near future, but Obama’s disregard of the Constitution and the precedents he sets imperil all Americans’ freedoms for generations to come.

We live in an age of overblown hyperbole, with either side accusing its opponents of extremism. Yet in the case of Obama, one need only to consult his own words for evidence of where he stands on the Constitution and separation of powers.
